Alternative treatments consist of:
- Surgical removal of the toenails and removal of the fungus in the toenail bed. (Ouch.)
- Oral medication: Prescription medications that target toenail fungus. The efficacy is fairly low and the medications can potentially cause liver damage.
- Topical treatments: These are topical applications of creams or oils that make the claim of reduction of toenail fungus. The effectiveness of these products is difficult to determine. As toenail fungus resides in the nail bed below the toenail it is not likely these treatments actually come in contact with the fungus.
Lasers have been shown to be effective in treating toenail fungus. ND YAG lasers in the 1064 nanometer wavelength penetrate below the nail and superheat the fungus. This heating destroys the fungus without damaging the nail.
Traditional laser treatment consists of a single laser exposure and then a wait of 12 weeks for the toenail to grow out from the cuticle to determine if the fungus has been removed. The costs for these treatments range from $100 to $200. If the fungus has not subsided or ceased completely the treatment starts again. Ultimately it may take 5 or more treatments to go away. Colorado Laser Treatments takes a different, more aggressive approach.
We charge a flat $600 for unlimited treatments. We schedule 3 initial treatments spaced at 2 weeks apart. We then schedule treatments every 3 weeks until the desired result occurs.
